We run MalasByFlora, our small family jewellery business. We specialise in creating unique 108 bead meditation malas and semi-precious gemstone jewellery.
We have been together for more than ten years since we met in Clapham, London. After spending some time saving money in London, we travelled, travelled some more, got married and eventually landed in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Oli ran a small dive school called ATI Divers and I was the manager at a hostel called La Iguana Perdida in Santa Cruz La Laguna.
Since then, we have had a child, Henry, and moved to Isla Verde, a boutique hotel and retreat centre also in Santa Cruz La Laguna. I began selling 108 bead malas for meditation at the hotel and they became very popular! Since then we have expanded our catalogue of products and begun creating earrings, bracelets and macrame jewellery.
During Covid-19 the demand really took off for our products so we launched a website while living in England. We are now back in Guatemala hoping that the tourism industry picks up!
At MalasByFlora we are dedicated to providing the highest quality gemstone jewellery both for meditation and crystal healing. All our materials are sourced from the finest manufacturers and are handmade and hand-knotted with the utmost care and love. We are also dedicated to sharing this form of meditation practice while honouring the many different cultures it is inspired by. Meditation cannot be traced back to one single religion or culture as it spans many. Flora’s family roots are in Japan and the Shinto Buddhism religion where beads are used for prayer, but this practice can also be found in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and Catholicism. All of our pieces are handmade by us and we are in reverence of the many religions and cultures that meditation beads come from and are happy to be able to share this practice with you.
We will be making new 108 bead mala designs and more jewellery while on Lake Atitlan so keep up to date and follow us on social media! Our stock is located in England so we can ship out to most countries fairly rapidly although we are currently in a country with no postal service…!
